Poet Dr. Maya Angelou is Dead: (1928 -2014)

 

The world lost Maya Angelou today. It was announced this morning that the poet and memoirist passed away at her home in Winston Salem, North Carolina, at the age of 86. Born on April 4,1928.

Angelou described in prose her experience of growing up in the south, where Jim Crow Laws reigned Supreme, at a time when the Great Depression was ravaging in the country.

In 1970, she published her first autobiography, I know why the bird sing, which details the hardship, abuse, and racism that she endured in her youthful days.

She was one of the first African American women to write a best-selling book and was nominated for a pulitzer prize for her poetry and a Tony for her acting. She won two Grammy for spoken word album of her poetry and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2010. Presented by President Barack Obama.

She lived a life as a teacher, artist and human being. She was a warrior for equality, tolerance and peace. She mastered several languages and published not just poetry, but advice books, cookbooks and children stories.

Angelou was a longtime friend and mentor to Oprah Winfrey.

Tributes began pouring from all corners of public - life from authors to politicians and musicians, both young and old.

I've learned that Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.
